Today we celebrate the triumph of Jesus through His Holy Cross. This day is also known as the Exaltation of the Cross, the Elevation of the Cross, Holy Cross Day and Holy Rood Day. At Mass we are reminded that Moses lifted up the bronze serpent over the people. It was a foreshadowing of the salvation through Jesus when He was lifted up on the Cross.
Our Mother Church sings of the triumph of the Cross, the instrument of our redemption. To follow Christ we must take up His cross, follow Him and become obedient until death, even if it means death on the cross. We identify with Christ on the Cross and become co-redeemers, sharing in His cross.
Even though we have this special day in celebration of His Triumph, we experience it daily. From the moment of our Baptism, we are given access to the mercy which His death and resurrection made possible. Each time you celebrate the Sacrament of Reconciliation, that is each time you go to Confession you claim the victory over sin which Jesus gives us.
Have you overcome a bad habit? Have you forgiven someone? Have you given up a negative relationship? Have you been healed of emotional, physical or spiritual illness? Have you surrendered anger? If so, the effects of the Triumph of the Cross are impacting your life.
Do you feel and inner peace? Have you practiced acts of charity? Do you support the Church? Have you shared your faith with anyone? Have you helped anyone improve their lives? These are all indiviual experineces of the Triumph of the Cross we celebrate each September 14th.As mysterious and grand the death and resurrection of Christ is, it is also practicle and experiential.
