Advent Begins!

By the grace of God, we have been given this holy season to prepare for the coming of Our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. We often refer to this as the season of waiting. In fact, that is what the word "advent" means. The Lord is here. The Lord is coming! The Lord is present!
We await the coming of the Lord. But this waiting is no passive waiting. It is an active waiting which involves preparation.

Just as a family would prepare for the birth of a new child we prepare to celebrate the birth of our Savior and the day of His return. Doctor appointments, buying supplies, baby showers, preparing a nursery, and eating or exercising properly often fill those days of waiting as the time of birth draws near.
As a Church we prepare to celebrate by preparing our environment and our souls. Decorations, Advent Wreaths, church cleaning, CCD programs, Lessons & Carols and even church parities comprise the element of preparing our environment. We prepare our souls with the Advent Readings …

Restless Hearts!

“The only hope, or else despair
Lies in the choice of pyre or pyre—
To be redeemed from fire by fire.
Who then devised the torment? Love.
Love is the unfamiliar name
Behind the hands that wove
The intolerable shirt of flame.
Which human power cannot remove.
We only live, only suspire
Consumed by either fire or fire.” T.S. Elliot

“pyre or pyre”: With what kind of fire do we want our hearts to burn? We are destined to be consumed by one kind of restlessness or another, but the flames are very different. Do we want God’s flames or those of our own choosing?
